Leon Emanuel Blanck Materials: Guidi Leather, Carbon Fiber and the SS22 Reflector Collection

Leon Emanuel Blanck's Anfractuous Distortion construction method, the body-cast pattern-making process and the label's asymmetry principle are covered in full in Leon Emanuel Blanck: Construction, Materials and Anfractuous Distortion. This piece goes deeper on one thing that guide only summarizes: the materials themselves, why LEB reaches for them, and what each does structurally in a finished piece.

Guidi horse leather at 1.4mm

For footwear, Blanck uses Guidi horse leather at 1.4mm thickness. Guidi is an Italian tannery and label known for hand-treated, vegetable-tanned hides with high density and a characteristic aging behavior; it is one of the reference names in the same leather-first Italian atelier tradition as A1923 and Carol Christian Poell. The 1.4mm gauge sits in a deliberate middle ground: thick enough to hold structural shape under the one-piece wrapping technique LEB uses for boots and high-tops, thin enough to still take the twisted, raw-cut collar construction without becoming stiff or resistant to shaping. Heavier gauges would fight the wrap; lighter gauges wouldn't hold the sculptural form once dry.

In-house dyeing and surface treatment

For garments, the label works with hand-treated and experimentally dyed leathers, with dyeing and surface treatment completed inside the atelier rather than sourced as pre-finished goods. That distinction matters for how a piece ages: industrially pre-finished leather is coated to a uniform, predictable surface before it ever reaches a cutting table, while atelier-dyed leather carries the variation of a hand process into the finished garment. Two pieces from the same collection can show visibly different surface character as a direct result.

Technical textiles: what each material is doing

LEB has built collections around materials that come from outside the fashion supply chain entirely: carbon and glass fiber, non-tearable PU military fabrics, kevlar fiber knits, metal weaves, gold-plated leather coating, resin, and parachute material. The selection logic is structural rather than decorative.

Carbon and glass fiber are chosen for weight-to-strength ratio; both hold a shape under tension with very little material mass, which suits the label's interest in rigid, sculptural panels that would otherwise require much heavier fabric to achieve the same silhouette.

Kevlar fiber knits bring abrasion and cut resistance more commonly associated with protective workwear, repurposed here for surface texture and durability rather than function.

PU military fabrics and parachute material are non-tearable by design, which lets the atelier work them into the same twisted, wrapped constructions used on leather without the fabric failing at stress points the way a conventional textile would.

Metal weaves and gold-plated leather coating function closer to hardware than fabric: rigid, reflective, and used where the design calls for a surface that behaves like metal rather than cloth.

SS22 Reflector: fisherman knit and Shattered Tech Fabric

The SS22 collection, titled Reflector, introduced a fisherman knit produced from Italian loom-knitted cotton and polyester, with seams fused using latex within the atelier rather than sewn conventionally. Fusing rather than stitching changes how the seam behaves: no thread to fray or pull, a flatter join, and a bond that moves with the fabric instead of creating a fixed stress line. The same collection developed what the brand called a Shattered Tech Fabric, a signature mold fabric hand-dyed with a transparent dye and processed entirely in-house, extending the same in-house-dyeing logic used on leather to a synthetic base.

What this means for buying on the archive market

Because the material choices are this varied and this hands-on, condition assessment on a resale piece should be material-specific rather than generic.

  • On Guidi-leather footwear, expect surface variation and developing patina as normal; a perfectly uniform, unweathered surface on an older pair is more unusual than an aged one.
  • On technical-textile pieces (carbon, kevlar, metal weave), check for structural integrity at seam and panel joins specifically, since these materials fail differently than woven fabric and don't show wear the way leather or cotton does.
  • On latex-fused knitwear from the Reflector line, check the fused seams for separation rather than checking for loose stitching, since there is no stitching to loosen in the first place.
