Dark Avant-Garde and Archive Fashion Glossary

Archive fashion

Garments sourced from a designer's past collections rather than the current season, valued for rarity, construction and their place in a label's history. Dark avant-garde

A design language built on muted or black palettes, unconventional silhouettes, raw or exposed construction and an emphasis on texture over decoration. It runs from the Belgian and Japanese schools through contemporary labels. See Dark Avant-Garde Fashion Explained.

The Antwerp Six

A group of six designers who graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and broke through with a shared presentation in London in the mid-1980s: Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dirk Van Saene, Walter Van Beirendonck and Marina Yee. Deconstruction

A construction approach that exposes or reworks the internal elements of a garment: visible seams, raw edges, unfinished linings, asymmetry and reassembled panels. It is a defining trait of the Belgian school and of much dark avant-garde tailoring.

Grail

Collector shorthand for a piece someone has searched for over a long period, usually rare, from a specific collection or era, and hard to find in wearable condition.

One-of-one

A piece that exists as a single example, whether a sample, a prototype or an item so rare that no comparable listing is in circulation. Often written 1-of-1 or 1of1.

Deadstock

Unworn stock from a past season that never sold at retail, distinct from used archive. It carries age but no wear.

Sample and runway sample

A pre-production or show piece made ahead of or for a runway presentation, often in a single size and sometimes with details that differ from the produced version. Samples are among the rarest archive items.

Patina

The surface character leather develops with age and use: softening, tonal shift, creasing and sheen. On heavy leathers it is considered desirable rather than a flaw.

Hair-on-hide and ponyhair

Leather that retains the animal's short hair on the surface, giving a dense, textured finish. Ponyhair is the common trade term even when the hide is calf.

Horse leather

A dense, hard-wearing leather prized in avant-garde footwear for the dramatic creasing and patina it develops. Central to houses such as Guidi; compared with kangaroo and other leathers in Guidi vs. A1923.

Fencing jacket

An Ann Demeulemeester signature: a cropped, asymmetric jacket whose closure and collar echo the protective gear of fencing. It recurs across her collections in canvas, wool and leather. See the Ann Demeulemeester collection and Collector's Guide.

Object and garment dyeing

Dyeing a finished garment or shoe rather than the raw material, which produces uneven, tonal colour and a lived-in surface. A hallmark of Italian avant-garde leather houses.

Goodyear welt and Blake stitch

Two shoemaking constructions. A Goodyear welt stitches a welt strip between upper and sole, allowing resoling and giving structure; a Blake stitch sews the sole directly to the upper for a slimmer profile. Both appear across archive footwear.
